What Is a Green Chalice Pall?
A green chalice pall is a stiffened square of fabric placed on top of the chalice during Mass, matching the green vestments of Ordinary Time. Like every chalice pall it protects the Precious Blood from dust and insects, and it belongs to the family of chalice linens together with the corporal and the purificator. Because Ordinary Time fills most of the year, a green pall is the workhorse of the sacristy.

Green is the color of hope, life and growth. It accompanies the Church through Ordinary Time — the weeks in which the faithful simply live the mystery of Christ, Sunday after Sunday, growing in faith like a field in season. Green vestments, green veils and green palls give those weeks their steady, hopeful tone.
When Is a Green Chalice Pall Used?
A green pall is used whenever Mass is celebrated in green vestments — that is, in the Offices and Masses of Ordinary Time, as directed by the General Instruction of the Roman Missal (no. 346). Depending on the year, Ordinary Time covers roughly half of the calendar, from the weeks after the Baptism of the Lord to the days before Advent — the longest stretch of green in the liturgical year.
