Icon of Our Lady of La Vang - Vietnam

La Vang in Vietnam is home to the National Shrine of Catholics. The history of Our Lady of La Vang is linked to a time of great persecution of Christians. In 1799-1801, many Christians took refuge in the jungle where, suffering through disease AND starvation, they awaited death. One day, when the community gathered for prayer, a figure of a lady surrounded by light appeared to them; she introduced herself as the Mother of God. The Blessed Virgin Mary gave them courage and comforted them in difficult times. Her unique sign of love was the promise that their prayers would be answered. Pope John Paul II entrusted the Vietnamese Church to the protection of Our Lady of La Vang.
