What Is a Liturgical Sprinkler?

A liturgical sprinkler (also called an aspergillum or aspergil) is a liturgical instrument used to sprinkle holy water on the congregation, altar, and sacred vessels during the rite of aspersion. It is typically used in conjunction with a holy water pot (aspersorium).

Types of Sprinklers

  • Brush-style aspergillum — features a brush or bristle head that absorbs and distributes holy water
  • Perforated ball aspergillum — a hollow ball with small holes that disperses water when shaken

Materials

Our sprinklers are crafted from brass, silver-plated metal, and natural bristles. Each piece is designed for comfortable handling and effective distribution of holy water.

Use in Liturgy

The sprinkler is used during the Asperges (before Sunday Mass) and at other times when holy water is blessed and distributed, such as Easter Vigil and blessings of homes and cemeteries.
