Saint Gregory came from a patrician family; his great-grandfather was Pope Felix III, and he was the son of Saint Silvia and Gordian Anicius. He received a thorough education and knew Greek, Latin, grammar, and rhetoric. In 575, he assumed the position of prefect of Rome, and after the death of Pope Pelagius II due to the plague epidemic, he was elected his successor. Saint Gregory pinned his hopes for the development of Christianity on missions; inaction can only lead to decline and the suppression of the faith. The main targets of his missions were the Anglo-Saxons, the Gauls, the Longbords, and the Iberian Visigoths. His pontificate lasted 15 years; at the beginning of his reign, Saint Gregory described himself as a “servant of the servants of God” who removed unworthy officials, pastors, and priests and preached the Word of God daily. He supported all people in need and the poor. Saint Gregory is the patron saint of England, singers, choirs, and students and teachers.
