What Are Collarettes and Collars?

Collarettes and collars are the white tabs or inserts that attach to clergy shirts to create the distinctive clerical collar look. They are the most visible sign of ordained ministry — the white band that identifies the wearer as a priest, deacon, or seminarian.

There are two main types: tab collars (which attach to the outside of the shirt) and insert collars (which slide into slots on the shirt). Both serve the same purpose but have different advantages depending on your preference and shirt style.

Every priest and deacon needs a supply of quality collars. They wear out with regular use and should be replaced when they become discolored or damaged.

What Types of Collars Are Available?

Collars come in several options:

Tab collars — attach to the outside of the shirt with studs or buttons. These are the most traditional and are easy to replace when they wear out.

Insert collars — slide into slots on the shirt collar. These are more comfortable for all-day wear and create a cleaner look.

Collarettes — a full collar band that wraps around the neck. These are less common but preferred by some clergy for comfort.

How Do I Choose the Right Collar?

  • Match your shirt. Tab collars work with tab-collar shirts. Insert collars work with insert-collar shirts.
  • Check the size. Collars come in standard neck sizes. Measure your neck before ordering.
  • Consider the material. Plastic inserts are durable and easy to clean. Celluloid inserts are more traditional but can crack over time.
  • Think about comfort. Insert collars are generally more comfortable for all-day wear.
