What Are Liturgical Candlesticks?
Liturgical candlesticks are candle holders placed on or near the altar during Mass and other liturgical celebrations. They are not just decorative — candles have deep symbolic meaning in Catholic worship. They represent Christ as the Light of the World and the prayers of the faithful rising to heaven.
The General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM) requires that candles be placed on or near the altar for every Mass. At minimum, two candles are required, but four or six are common for Sunday Mass and solemnities.

How Do I Choose the Right Candlesticks?
- Check the GIRM requirements. You need at least two candles for Mass. More candles create a more solemn atmosphere.
- Consider the candle size. Make sure the candlesticks fit the candles you plan to use. Standard altar candles are typically 1-2 inches in diameter.
- Think about stability. Candlesticks should have a wide enough base to prevent tipping.
- Match your church's decor. Brass, bronze, and silver candlesticks are the most common and fit most church interiors.
