Saint John Paul II

He was one of the most influential leaders of the 20th century. His election to the See of Peter particularly impacted events in Eastern Europe and Asia in the 1980s and 1990s. He helped improve the Catholic Church's relations with Judaism, Islam, the Orthodox Church, and the Anglican Communion. During his pontificate, John Paul II visited 129 countries and elevated more people to the altar than his predecessors in the previous five centuries. He died on April 2, 2005. Delegations from more than 150 countries attended the funeral ceremony, and six days of national mourning were declared in Poland. May 1, 2011. John Paul II was beatified and declared a saint on April 27, 2014.
