On April 2, 2011, the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments announced that the day of John Paul II's liturgical memorial would be October 22 - the date of the inauguration of the pontificate in 1978. In September 2014, Pope Francis ordered that Saint John Paul II be included in the universal Roman Calendar as a random memoir.
