Saint Marcellus cross icon - protection against the plague
The story of the fire and the plague is connected to the cross of St. Marcellinus. On May 22, 1519, the church dedicated to St. Marcellinus burned down in a great fire. The only element that survived was the cross. From that moment on, the cross of St. Marcellinus became an essential object of worship for the Romans. A few years later 1522, a terrible plague epidemic in Rome ended thanks to a penitential procession with the Cross of St. Marcellus. Pope Francis also prayed for healing and protection of the whole world from the coronavirus pandemic at the Cross of St. Marcellus in the face of the ongoing epidemic.
