Cope Sizes and How to Measure for a Cope

A standard cope is about 145 cm (57 in) long, with a hem width of 140–160 cm. To measure for a cope, run a tape from the shoulder seam to the floor in shoes for the length, then across the shoulders and across the hem for the width. Custom lengths are available on request.

Most copes are made to a standard size, but a cope that is too long drags and wears at the hem, while one that is too short looks cramped. This guide explains the measurements that matter and how to take them correctly.

How to Measure for a Cope

  1. Wear the shoes you will use for liturgy.
  2. Stand straight and relaxed, with the arms at the sides.
  3. Measure from the shoulder seam to the floor for the length.
  4. Measure across the shoulders, from arm to arm, for the back width.
  5. Lay the cope flat and measure across the bottom edge for the hem width.
  6. Measure around the base of the neck for the opening.

Length and Drape

The right length leaves the hem just above the floor, with enough extra fabric for the cope to drape when the wearer walks. A cope that touches the floor will pick up dust and wear quickly; a cope that stops above the ankle looks short. If you are between sizes, choose the longer one and have it shortened by a sacristy seamstress.

Custom Sizes and Made-to-Order

Most of our copes are made to a standard size of about 145 cm. If you need a longer or shorter cope, contact us before ordering. Made-to-order copes take an additional 3–14 business days before shipping. See our Catholic cope collection for the standard sizes and fabrics.

Cope Size by Wearer

Height is the main variable: a cope that fits a 175 cm priest will be too long for a 160 cm wearer. Bishops may need a slightly longer cope to accommodate the mitre and crozier, and a deacon may prefer a shorter cope for movement. When in doubt, measure rather than guess.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the standard length of a cope?

A: About 145 cm (57 in) in our collection; many copes fall between 140 and 160 cm.

Q: How do I measure for a cope?

A: Measure from the shoulder seam to the floor in shoes for the length, and across the shoulders and hem for the width.

Q: Can a cope be shortened?

A: Yes. A sacristy seamstress can shorten the hem, but avoid cutting through the embroidery; if possible, order the correct length.

Q: Do copes come in sizes?

A: Most are standard length with adjustable fastening. Custom lengths are available on request.

Q: How long does a made-to-order cope take?

A: An additional 3–14 business days before shipping, depending on the model and embroidery.

Conclusion
