Deacon Stole Size Guide: Length, Width, and How to Measure

Deacon stole with gold Jerusalem crosses, front view

A deacon stole is a long, narrow band, so the two measurements that matter are length and width. Our standard deacon stole is 130 cm (51.2 in) long and 12 cm (4.7 in) wide, with two models at 13.5 cm (5.3 in) wide. This guide explains how those numbers translate into fit and how to measure for a replacement.

The standard size

The standard deacon stole in our collection is 130 cm (51.2 in) long and 12 cm (4.7 in) wide. The length is measured along the band, not from the shoulder to the hem. When worn, the band goes over the left shoulder and across the body to the right hip; the front end should reach the hip, not the waist or the thigh. Two models — the IHS two-color stole and the green-red two-tone stole — are 13.5 cm (5.3 in) wide for a fuller look.

How to measure a deacon stole

Lay the stole flat and measure from one end to the other along the band. Do not stretch it. For the width, measure across the band at the widest point, usually near the embroidered end. If you are comparing with a stole you already use, measure that stole the same way and compare the two numbers. A difference of 2–3 cm in length is usually not noticeable; a difference of 10 cm is.

How the stole should sit

When worn, the center of the band sits on the left shoulder. The front end crosses the chest and ends at the right hip. The back end runs from the left shoulder to the right hip. If the front end hangs below the hip, the stole is too long; if it stops above the hip, it is too short. The width should cover the chest comfortably without twisting. A stole that is too narrow can roll at the shoulder; one that is too wide can bunch under the dalmatic.

Custom sizes and adjustments

Selected models can be adjusted on request. If you need a longer or shorter stole, contact us before ordering and tell us the length you need, measured along the band. For a parish with several deacons, order one sample first and check the fit before ordering the rest. The standard 130 cm length fits most adults.

Frequently asked questions

Q: What is the standard size of a deacon stole?

A: Our standard is 130 cm (51.2 in) long and 12 cm (4.7 in) wide. Two models are 13.5 cm (5.3 in) wide.

Q: How do you measure a deacon stole?

A: Lay it flat and measure from one end to the other along the band. Measure the width across the band at the widest point. Do not stretch the fabric.

Q: How long should a deacon stole hang?

A: The front end should reach the right hip. If it hangs below the hip, the stole is too long; if it stops above the hip, it is too short.

Q: Can a deacon stole be shortened?

A: Selected models can be adjusted on request. Contact us with the length you need, measured along the band, before ordering.

Q: Does the width of a deacon stole matter?

A: Yes. A stole that is too narrow can roll at the shoulder; one that is too wide can bunch under the dalmatic. The standard 12 cm width suits most deacons; 13.5 cm gives a fuller look.
