What Are Sacred Icons?

Sacred icons are religious images used for veneration and prayer in the Catholic tradition. They are not just artwork — they are windows into the divine, helping the faithful focus their prayers and connect with the saints and mysteries they depict.

The tradition of iconography goes back to the early Church. Icons are written, not painted — each element has theological meaning. While the Eastern Catholic and Orthodox traditions have the most formal iconography, the Latin Church also has a rich tradition of sacred images for devotion.

Every parish and many Catholic homes benefit from quality sacred icons. They are appropriate for home altars, prayer corners, parish offices, and church devotional spaces.

What Types of Sacred Icons Are Available?

Sacred icons come in several styles:

Printed icons — high-quality reproductions on paper or card stock. These are affordable and appropriate for home devotion, prayer cards, and parish bulletin inserts.

Wood-mounted icons — printed images mounted on wood panels. These are more durable and appropriate for home altars, parish offices, and gift-giving.

Hand-painted icons — traditional icons painted by hand following the canons of iconography. These are the most expensive but also the most theologically rich and beautiful.

How Do I Choose the Right Sacred Icon?

  • Consider the purpose. For personal prayer, a printed icon is fine. For a home altar or gift, a wood-mounted or hand-painted icon is more appropriate.
  • Check the image quality. The image should be clear, theologically accurate, and reverently presented.
  • Think about the size. Icons range from prayer-card size to large wall-hanging size. Choose based on where you will display it.
  • Look for theological accuracy. Good icons follow traditional iconographic conventions and depict the subject accurately.
